Art and Design
At Mitchell Brook, our curriculum has been designed to encourage children to see themselves as artists by exploring new techniques to promote their own creativity, confidence and their sense of self. The Art Academy programme promotes the discovery of high-quality vocabulary, a wide range of skills/techniques and artists which will inspire children to develop their love of art. This will, in turn, provide access to ambitious career prospects opportunities in the future such as architects. The units within our curriculum have been developed so that children are able to build upon their previous learning to produce high quality outcomes and have opportunities to experiment, develop or create unique pieces of artwork which reflect a part of themselves as individual artists. At the end of each unit, children would have produced pieces of work incorporating their new learnt skills and techniques.
At Mitchell Brook Primary School we aim to offer opportunities for children to:
- Understand and enjoy art, craft and design
- Experience a broad and balanced range of art activities and show progression within these experiences
- Develop their ability to observe, investigate, respond to and record the world around them through a growing variety of forms and media
- Develop the use of a range of tools, media and processes

Design Technology
Design and Technology helps to develop children’s skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making functional products. It incorporates many traditional skills such as drawing, cooking, model making, problem solving, observation, discussion and puts them together in an approach which encourages the children to become inventors and designers! At Mitchell Brook Primary School we feel it is vital to nurture creativity and innovation through design, and by exploring the designed and made world in which we all live and work. The Design and Technology National Curriculum is followed in KS1 through to KS2. Three Design and Technology units are covered each school year with lots of opportunities for cross-curricular learning such as the properties of materials in Science, the use of measuring in Maths, Computing and Art.
